Assistant Retail Store Manager/Clerk 

$15.00+ per hour (rate dependent upon experience)

Type of Employment:  Part-time, permanent employment (approximately 24 to 30 hours per week).  Successful applicant expected to work weekends. 

Job Responsibilities & Accountabilities:

Reporting to the farm owner, the Retail Manager is required to:

  • Manage the overall operation of the on-farm retail store;
  • Assist store owner with wholesale orders;
  • Develop a thorough knowledge of alpaca fibre and promote its attributes and benefits to customers in order to help the customer make a purchasing decision;
  • Responsible for opening and closing the store, including cashing out;
  • Greet and welcome customers in a friendly and engaging manner and proceed to help them with their shopping experience;
  • Promote specialty products and sale items in a manner that best serves the needs of the individual customer;
  • Provide customers with the best possible shopping experience;
  • Handle customer complaints in accordance with company policy;
  • Process sales transactions at the POS (point-of-sale) counter;
  • Receive inventory, ticket & price new items, stock, replenish and organize merchandise displays, as required;
  • Arrange and promote new stock and/or special sale/clearance items at the front of the store for maximum visibility;
  • Assist with store’s cash and inventory including daily cash reconciliation, receiving merchandise, price changes, ticketing merchandise, and proper accounting and reporting as required;
  • Take photographs of new products, create written product descriptions and upload information to the online store platform;
  • Add, delete and update online store inventory items, ensuring adequate stock levels, etc.
  • General housekeeping duties, including vacuuming, washing and dusting;
  • Other duties as required/assigned by company owner.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • High school completion, post-secondary marketing education an asset;
  • One year minimum experience in retail services;
  • General knowledge of retail accounting software (i.e. Quickbooks Pro);
  • Good interpersonal communication skills and ability to work with others;
  • Personal initiative and demonstrated willingness to learn new tasks;
  • Ability to prioritize work tasks and problem-solve desirable;
  • Familiar with occupational health and safety policies/procedures;
  • Valid BC Driver’s License.

General Farm Worker

Kensington Prairie Farm Ltd, Langley, BC

$12.00 to $15.00 per hour

Type of Employment:  Part-time, permanent (16 – 32 hours/week)

Job Responsibilities & Accountabilities:

Under the direction of the General Farm Manager, the general farm worker is required to:

  • feed and tend livestock (alpacas, cattle) and poultry, including cleaning barns and pens;
  • assist with animal husbandry duties in conjunction with other farm staff;
  • assist in the maintenance of facilities and farm infrastructure, including field/pasture maintenance (check fences/gates, sprinkler set-up/rotation, noxious week removal, pasture mowing, etc.) and garden maintenance, as directed;
  • assist with hay loading, snow removal and other ‘seasonal’ tasks, as required;
  • other general tasks, as directed. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • basic farm knowledge (usually obtained from working on a family farm or similar work situation but employer willing to train);
  • equipment operation including utility vehicle, Avant loader (training provided), riding lawnmower, and other small farm equipment;
  • ability to understand and follow information and instruction presented;
  • good interpersonal communication skills and ability to work with others;
  • personal initiative and demonstrated willingness to learn new tasks;
  • familiar with occupational health and safety policies/procedures. 

Additional Information:

  • weekend work plus additional week-days, number of which are dependent upon seasonal farm workload;
  • suitable for a university/college student or individual seeking permanent part-time year-round employment.  Can lead to full-time summer work (May through September).

General Farm Manager

$39,000 per annum

Type of Employment:  Full-time, permanent employment.  Successful applicant expected to reside on-farm in a two-bedroom home (furnished or unfurnished).

Job Responsibilities & Accountabilities:

Reporting to the farm owners, the General Farm Manager is required to:

  • Manage the overall operation of the farm, including pasture management and fence repairs;
  • Oversee the cattle breeding program, cattle handling, calving, pasture rotation, weaning, sale of the annual calf crop, shipping and halter-training, as necessary (approximately 40 Registered Purebred Polled Herefords);
  • Assist owner with the management and care of the alpaca herd (approximately 40);
  • Manage and care for small organic poultry flock;
  • Develop and oversee maintenance schedule of facilities and equipment, and perform routine repairs, as required;
  • Train and supervise part-time employees, ensuring work tasks are identified, prioritized and completed in a timely manner;
  • Maintain water system including scheduling of regular well maintenance and repairs to automatic livestock water system;
  • Assist in hay season, as required, acting as an extra equipment operator (i.e. mower, rake, baler, loader wagon, etc.)
  • Maintain farm greenways and grassed areas (excluding flower and vegetable gardens), fertilizing and mowing, as required;
  • Maintain and repair out buildings, fences, gates and small equipment, as required;
  • Other duties necessary to maintain and effectively manage the farm and/or as directed by the owners. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Two years minimum experience in farm management and staff supervision;
  • High School completion, post-secondary agricultural education an asset;
  • Working knowledge of bovine health and husbandry practices;
  • Mechanical skills necessary to perform routine equipment maintenance and operation required;
  • Good interpersonal communication skills and ability to work with others;
  • Personal initiative and demonstrated willingness to learn new tasks;
  • Familiar with occupational health and safety policies/procedures;
  • Valid BC Driver’s Licence.

Farm Manager – Hay/Silage Production & Sales 

General job duties for this position include:

  • Design, implement and manage multi-client hay/silage production schedule;
  • Hire, train and supervise farm workers;
  • Market custom hay production services to new and existing customers;
  • Purchase farm machinery, seed, fertilizers and other supplies;
  • Maintain farm machinery and buildings;
  • Maintain production and financial records for all customers and sales.

Specific job duties include:

  • Overseeing the hay production process, including:  soil testing and preparation, fertilization, seed selection and planting, pest management and control, irrigation and drainage, fence maintenance/repairs, hay/silage harvesting, crop quality control, storage, packaging and distribution.
  • Marketing custom hay production services to farmers in the region.
  • Responsible for negotiation of lease and use arrangements for current and additional lands for hay production.
  • Marketing and sales of hay and silage on a year-round basis.

Terms of Employment:  Full-time, permanent position (40 hours / week).

Compensation:  CAN $47,000/annum. Includes one-bedroom furnished apartment. No employee benefit package.

Location of work:  1736 – 248 Street, Aldergrove, BC, V4W 2C3

Skills Requirement:

  • Minimum four (4) years experience managing a multi-disciplinary farming operation;
  • Successful completion of post-secondary certification in farm operations;
  • Direct experience in hay/silage production in the Lower Mainland;
  • Strong mechanical skills and experience in complex machinery operation and maintenance;
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively;
  • Ability to work to deadlines;
  • British Columbia Driver’s License;
  • Demonstrated ability to drive and operate large farm machinery safely.
